AL-MUKHA
H ISTORY:
Only a few people know that as late as 400 years ago all the coffee in Europe came from the port of Al-Mukha, Al-mocha, or Mocha, a tiny town on the Red Sea in what is
Republic of Yemen. The name Mocha is the reminder of the original home of coffee.
A story circulating in Yemen tells how "patron saint" of Mokha, offered passing Portuguese sailors some of his daily constitutional drink. The sailors noticed
with great surprise that the black brew beans home with them. In this way the
secret recipe reached Portugal, and from there it conquered the whole Europe and
the rest of the world.Sir Middleton, director of the British East India Company, landed in
Al-Mukha in
1616 and, on his way back, took with him the first sacks of coffee to be seen in
England. Six years later, Captain Pieter can der Broeke came to the harbor of
Mokha and inquired for his past about the possibilities of the coffee trade for
the Dutch East India Company.

U
p to the end of the 17th century nearly all coffee for the world-wide trade came through the port of Al-Mukha. However, the days of the town's flourishing trade were soon to be numbered. Once the share of sell went America, export from Yemen declined rapidly, and the coffee trade of Al-Mukha almost ceased. Yemen, whose role as coffee producer was almost forgotten by the rest of the world, has never given up growing coffee.
